Australia’s Greenest Development

There is a really interesting article on Inhabit about Frasers Broadway. It is a highly sustainable development planned to be built in the middle of Sydney. Hopefully other major cities will follow suite, especially in the south-western US where urban sprawl has obliterated the natural environment.

Microsoft’s subscription confusion

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Unsubscribing from an email mailing list should be simple, one click simple. Microsoft makes the process relatively painful, except for one glaring design fohpah. The instructions to unsubscribe seem simple enough:

To unsubscribe, select the checkbox next to the desired communication(s) and click the Unsubscribe button below.

What the directions fail to explain is that the “checkbox” is entitled “Subscribe”! So I need to click on the “Subscribe” checkbox, then click the “Unsubscribe” button? That isn’t confusing at all.

New website

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I have created a new website for information on my upcoming wedding:

http://www.melissa-shane.com

On a more technical note, getting this up and running was a pain! I followed all of the instructions, just like I have a few time before but to no avail. I created the website locally, placed it into a subversion repository, configured the appropriate files according to the instructions for the “Shovel” recipe for Textdrive, ran the proper commands and viola’… NOTHING!!! So very frustrating. The one error I was receiving was that the lighttpd webserver could not restart, which I ignored because it hasn’t been ablet to restart in a while and everything was running fine. After many frustrating hours of re-running the steps, double checking for errors, creating new problems, etc… I finally had an epiphany. The webserver has to restart to grab the new config file! Duh! So, I manually killed the process, then restarted it and everything was fine.

A thing that I have created

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

So I recently re-designed a website, Pinnell Construction Inc.. It changed it from a fairly boring and bland website to something that I consider much better. I still have some work to do, such as:

  • Incorporate logo into site
  • Create an image gallery
  • Form for contacts instead of just using an email link
  • Play wth fonts to smooth things out a little
  • Create Quicktime VR for gallery

All in all, I really like the new site. I have become a fan of whitespace (as you can tell by this weblog!) and I think it works well for this site.

Slight re-design

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

I made a few minor changes to the design. I don’t think they will be sticking around though. The change, if you hadn’t noticed is that the sidebar on the left has a green background now. I wanted to get more green into the page, but I think that may be too much, or maybe to simple? I also changed the bullet for the items in the sidebar, I think that will be staying, but I will re-size it to make it smaller. Oh yeah! I also added a list of current weblog entries that I read, this is autmatically updated via Google reader, so basically I am syndicating content from about 10 different blogs on my sidebar. I think I will be moving this to it’s own page though, it seems like too much text to be sitting in the sidebar.

P.S. please let me know what you think! Since I don’t have the commenting feature working yet (I am working on it!), please just send me an e-mail to [shane at everydayblog dot net]. Thanks!

I haven’t visited this site in a while. I was checking it out earlier today and realized that I really like design. I am fascinated by how ordinary things can continually be redesigned and be all at once the same and completely different.
