Make Safari’s windows behave properly

I have not used Safari as my primary browser in OSX primarily because I prefer the tab behaviour of Firefox. This was true until I found this interesting article (See #4) on MacLife about changing the way Safari handles tabs.

Simply open up the Terminal and enter the following:

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool TRUE

This little gem tells Safari to open new windows in new tabs instead of in an entirely new window, just like Firefox does. Hopefully Apple will make this simpler in the future via an option in Safari’s Preferences, but until then I think this will suffice.

Now all I need Apple to do is to get auto-complete of URLs working like Firefox…

Yay! Thanks for finding this – very useful. I hate Firefox when I can’t use Tab Mix Plus – like when Firefox upgrades but the extension doesn’t.

When did you get a Mac?

Have you played with the Beta Safari 4, they have added a default tab button up in the right hand corner.

I have seen it, I am not sure if I like Apple violating their own UI principles by placing content in the title bar. I have seen that it can be turned off though, so that is good.

Having the tabs in the title bar is not a good idea, one object with two purposes. Selecting a tab sometimes gets confused with dragging the window. I like the way firefox’s tab arrangement works.
