Yeah, right…

Wired News has an article about record labels trying to legitimize file sharing. Why would any internet savvy person pay for a file that they can download for free? I used to think that if a legal file sharing alternative were available, I would use it. Now, however, I feel like the record labels are just a bunch of greedy a-holes trying to save a business model that is dying.
In my opinion, the record industry used collusive pricing to maintain artificially high CD prices, which related directly to over inflated profit margins. They maintained a stranglehold over distributors and force fed the public highly polished pop music that had little to no artistic quality. Of course not every record label was doing this, but I would argue that the industry as a whole was.
I for one can’t wait until the music industry evolves into what I believe will be it’s next iteration. I foresee a future where artists make their money by performing music, not by recording ultra-glossy, over engineered, formulaic hits wrapped in an album of lesser songs. Then we will just have to battle TicketMaster!
